YOUNG & SEXY
Life Through One Speaker (Mint)

Reviewed by DJ Johnson

Vancouver's Young & Sexy (Paul Pittman and Lucy Brain) beat the stuffings out of the sophomore jinx with this set of exquisitely dreamy pop tunes guaranteed to please. As it was with last year's Stand Up For Your Mother, much of the music on Life Through One Speaker manages to be down tempo and uplifting at the same time, and the mid to up tempo tunes are absolutely joyous. Everything is so well crafted you can't help but be captivated. Lyrics roll out like poetry, musical surprises are placed in odd spots, and when I say musical surprises I mean everything from the instrumental equivalent of poetry to totally unexpected notes that don't belong. Just enough to momentarily jar you out of the euphoria they've so carefully placed you in. Why? Ask them. It's an interesting effect, though, in the middle of the beautiful, reverbed, finger-picked electric guitars, jangly acoustic guitars, flowing bass, harmony vocals and gentle drums. They've made their act unique, and with voices like Paul's and (especially) Lucy's, you can expect to see Young & Sexy on the scene for a long time to come.
