BARNACLED
6 (Corleone)
Reviewed by Holly Day
Not sure how I feel about the use of an accordion in a free jazz setting. I
like the idea, but in practice, I think this particular instrument runs the
risk of sounding too tinny next to the otherwise strong horns and
percussion used here. I do appreciate the band trying something new,
though-I'm just too big a fan of the accordion to see it used in this way.
The album as a whole is a lot of fun for free jazz fans who haven't quite
crossed over into John Zorn's wilder compositions and are still partial to
the structure of milder bands like Sex Mob-this has a lot of the latter
with a hint of the former, just about to go completely crazy but still
mellow enough to keep you from driving off the road if you're listening to
this in your car.
