BREAKING LACES
Sohcahtoa (Sidewinder)
Reviewed by Holly Day
I don't know what it is about this album, but it makes me itch all over,
like I need to get up and run around in circles or something. It's not that
I can't keep my feet still because I want to dance-it's like I want to move
around and see how far this claustrophobic little bubble of music will let
me stretch. It's like being stuck in a can of happy pop music, so rigidly
composed and recorded that there isn't any room left for interpretation or
enjoyment. Everything feels forced here, from the heavy-handed strumming of
the guitars to the flat string arrangements to the overly-dramatic
rendering of the vocals by Willem Hartong to the point where I feel like
I'm being forced to listen to the music, which I just don't like.
