MATT BOROFF
Matt Boroff (Lo End Recs)
Reviewed by DJ Johnson
I don't know if Matt Boroff developed this sound in his native New Jersey or after he moved to Austria, but either way he's set himself apart from the crowd with some of the most unusual and compelling music of the year. Boroff presents his music in power trio format with a slight twist. Bassist Marcus Bodenseh plays this sometimes quite hard rock on an upright bass and never leaves the lower register wanting. He works so well with drummer Little Konzett that Boroff has all the room in the world to get creative on guitar, something he seems to have absolutely no trouble doing. He rarely reaches the conclusion you expect from years of conditioning, and as far as I'm concerned, that instantly makes him worth listening to. The fact that the conclusions he reaches are better than anything you could have imagined make him worth evangelizing to your friends. Which is what I'm doing. With a slightly weathered and very warm voice, Boroff does magic on contemplative acoustic tunes that are light years from run-of-the-mill, and when he goes psychedelic, as he does in "Kontrol," he brings to the table everything needed to satisfy the mind-trippers and the alt-radio crowd. Matt and the guys are major-ready. Let's hope they don't end up losing what makes them sound like this when those majors get hold of them.
