MICHAEL JEROME BROWNE AND THE TWIN RIVERS STRING BAND
self-titled (Borealis)
Reviewed by John Sekerka
Hey, did'ya know that violin music can not only be tolerable, but downright fun? Yup, but then it's called a fiddle, and fiddle music is what's on the menu here. Messieur Browne and company not only fiddle around, but they steel some laps, pluck mandolins and fumble with gourds. This is old timey bluegrass music without that dusty attic smell, revved up and ready for barn-burning dances, but also quite suitable around the campfire. A couple of French numbers add a Cajun spice to the platter. And though it usually comes with reservation, I must say even the sparse yodelling sounds pretty fine.
