This installment in the Delos Caribbean Carnival Series is an excellent overview of steelband music. The ensembles represented range from combos to orchestras, and the music includes traditional Caribbean sounds along with western pop and classical pieces. Along the way, the interested listener can begin to get a sense of the range of possibilities offered by instruments that are, at their heart, transformed scrap.

The notes include a brief historical look at the steelband, along with informative diagrams describing the design and construction of the instruments. This CD is as valuable to the music educator as to the general enthusiast. It's also likely to create some enthusiasts among the previously uninitiated.
