VOODOO ROOSTERS
Heavy Loaded (Full Scale)
Reviewed by
Eric Steiner
The Voodoo Roosters’ debut CD begins with a rollicking “Who’s Blues” and it
doesn’t let up for 12 strong tracks that celebrate horn-powered blues.
“Rosie’s Window” and a cover of Stevie Wonder’s “I Wish” show that Bluejay
Saunders’ vocals and Scotty Scott’s guitar can get more than a little funky,
while “Dream in Color” and “House That Love Built” are slow, sax-driven
numbers that are sure to fill a dancefloor. Saunders’ and Scott’s
songwriting is right-on, too: they’ve captured the blues in 11 original cuts
and showcase a fine six-piece band. Cory Sandahl’s bass and Howdy
McFarland’s drums build a great foundation for Scotty Harris’ tenor sax and
Bob Baum’s Hammond B-3. Sitting in with the Voodoo Roosters on Heavy Loaded
are the Tower of Power horns: Doc Kupka, Mic Gillette and Andy Suzuki.
Together, they’ve put together an exciting set that’s all over the blues map.
The Voodoo Roosters have warmed up Seattle area blues audiences for some of
the best players around, including Delbert McClinton, Big Bill Morganfield,
Koko Taylor, Roomful of Blues, among many others. Heavy Loaded shows that
they’re ready to be headliners in their own right. For a great taste of
funky blues, check out their soundclips online at
