THE BLACK CROWES
Greatest Hits - Tribute To A Work
In Progress (Columbia)

Chris & Rich Robinson and company have earned this. The Black Crowes have remained a band, against steep odds, through depressions and divorces and all kinds of outside pressures. Through it all, they've produced great guitar-based blues records time and time again without giving in to the temptation to get poppy for the mega-bucks. Greatest Hits makes their case with 16 butt-kickin' songs from all phases of their career. Running in chronological order, the disc also serves as a growth chart, showing a band that began as a fairly precise Faces/Stones-style act and later became a... well, a much more mature and confident Faces/Stones-style act. "Jealous Again," "Hard To Handle," "She Talks To Angels," "Bad Luck Blue Eyes Goodbye," "Go Faster" and most of the other songs here give the listener more than enough evidence to base their judgement on. Rich Robinson's considerable growth as a guitarist is definitely obvious by the final track of what I'd have to say is one of the most coherent compilations of the past few years. You've heard their sound. Do you like it? You'll like all of this.
