THE BROOD
Beyond The Valley Of The Brood (Dionysus)

Reviewed by DJ Johnson

Portland, Maine's coolest band, The Brood, is still making bitchin' garage music long after most of the other 80s mod groups have hung up the jerseys. The girls are still right on their original path, churning out guitar-driven and Vox organ-decorated rock and roll. Chris Horne's songs still balance perfectly between originality and something oddly familiar that you can't quite put your finger on. Noooo, it's not a Standells tune... nooo, not The Seeds.... Trust me, it's The Brood. Asch Gregory's keyboard whirlpools stamp it all and, along with Horne's trademark growl, makes it instantly identifiable. The great mod bands may be dwindling in number, but as long as there is a Brood the genre is in good hands, and there will still be new classics. When you get this CD, hit track 6 ("You Lied") a few times, then kick back and let the whole album work its magic.
