LEE DORSEY
Ride Your Pony/The New Lee Dorsey (Sundazed)

Reviewed by Shaun Dale

These two disc should handle the hardest Crescent City R&B jones for a good long while. You get literally dozens of Allen Toussaint songs, produced by Toussaint himself and his compatriot Marshall Sehorn. You get some rare tracks featuring duets with soul songbird Betty Harris. You get the Meters in their role as the top New Orleans session outfit. And you get the Ya Ya man himself, Mr. Lee Dorsey, singing songs you know by heart and some you've likely never heard.

Between these two reissues, you get a total of 23 bonus cuts which means the complete catalog of Lee Dorsey releases on the Amy and Sehorn labels. It's one of the greatest catalogs in the history of one of music's greatest cities and a valuable addition to your R&B shelf, both historically and musically.

When Kid Chocolate hung up the gloves, he became Lee Dorsey, body and fender specialist. Luckily for us, he was a cat with at least three lives, and Lee Dorsey, rhythm and blues specialist, became a true American treasure. All the reasons are here. Listen, learn, and enjoy.
