Songs The Lord Asked Us Not To Play (Squish Me Down Records)
Reviewed by Holly Day
This could end up being the most viably commercial band I've intentionally
listened to this month. They've got a lot of elements to them that
traditionally appeal to "rougher" hip kids, especially those into '80s
guitar pop like Bon Jovi and the ilk. The lyrics, taken as they are, are
heavily melodramatic, struggling to define people and angry/sad feelings - but
hey, that's what kids like. Me, I'm too sarcastic and old to not listen to
something like this and dissect the hell out of it, and instead of nodding
my head in simpatico with the album and feeling like gosh, someone's finally
saying out loud the stuff I've been holding deep inside, I can only point to
cliched phrases and repetitive power chords.
