THE DU-TELS

Gary Lucas sure knows how to pick 'em. First he accosted Captain Beefheart into
a job, and now after years of perfecting his avant jazz guitar status in New
York City, he accosts Peter Stampfel into a job. You remember the Holy Modal
Rounders? Well you should. Anyhow, as the ever so quirky duo The Du-Tels, these
fellas create choppy, herky-jerky minstrel tunes best suited for travelling
carnivals: "Astro Boy," "Captain Kidd," "Voodoo Queen Marie." Lucas offers
minimal stringed accompaniment while Stampfel blurts out his determined vocals
in a style relying on the emotional, old-timey side of music. Covers of
"Shortening Bread," "Ring of Fire" and the Teletubbies theme will give you a
clue. Not for everyone, as it should be.
