FANCIE
A Negative Capability (Hush)
Reviewed by Holly Day
Okay, I know I have the brain of a 13-year-old, if that, but I can't be the
only person out there who cracks up giggling when the line "come down and
taste my meat" is uttered in a song. The songs on here have so much
promise, mostly because I love the musical arrangements, which are soft,
stark, mostly augmented and well-produced acoustic guitar numbers with the
occasional full band accompaniment including a violin, flute, cello, and a
beautiful french horn; however, and there must be a however here, the songs
are being taken way too seriously for what they are, and the vocals
come across as overwrought and melodramatic where a touch of melancholy
would do just fine.
