HASIL ADKINS
Poultry In Motion (Norton)
Reviewed by John Sekerka
The year is 1955 and the world is all a flutter over Elvis shakin' his hips like
he's got ants in his pants. Meanwhile a crazed hillbilly hotshot rockin' roller
is taking music a little further out. One man band Hasil Adkins records his
"push in, push out" raunch and roll classic "Chicken Walk," in a makeshift
recording studio slapped together in his folks' shack. White trash and roll is
born. With "Chicken Hunch," "Chicken Run," "Chicken Flop," "Chicken Hop" ... the
poultry obsession continues to this day. Leave it to the good folks at Norton
records (who resurrected Hasil's career as they have with so many American music
treasures) to serve up this thoroughly tasty chicken compilation. Besides the
draw of the obvious kitsch factor, you get a full scope of Hasil Adkins from his
riveting, supercharged rockabilly beginnings to his recent trashy forays - and
baby, it's all so good. Elvis is dead, long live the Haze!
