JOHN HIATT
Anthology (Hip-O)
Reviewed by Shaun Dale
How good a songwriter is John Hiatt? Ask Asleep At The Wheel, Roseanne
Cash, Marshall Crenshaw, Bob Dylan, Steve Earle, the Everly Brothers, Buddy
Guy, Emmylou Harris, Nick Lowe, Willie Nelson, the Neville Brothers, Iggy
Pop, Bonnie Raitt, Linda Rondstadt, Mitch Ryder or Irma Thomas. That's just
a fraction of the noteworthy artists that have chosen to record John Hiatt
songs, and you might notice that there are several there who are perfectly
capable of turning out a decent tune or two on their own.
What's less well known, actually, is how good a performer Hiatt is in his
own right. It seems like there's always a John Hiatt song somewhere around
the charts by someone, but it's rarely his own recordings, which he's been
cranking out regularly for nearly 30 years. This two disc collection offers
a chance to hear lots of songs you're already familiar with in their
original incarnations, and to hear a few more that you might have missed.
40 tracks can't contain every good song Hiatt's written but it provides
plenty of room for plenty of great ones. Fact is, you probably don't have
his full catalog, and you might not want it. It's a lot of stuff. But you
really should have a representative sampling, and now you can have it all in
one place. Hiatt deserves this treatment, and you deserve this set.
