KNOXVILLE GIRLS
In A Paper Suit (In The Red)
Reviewed by John Sekerka
Nice to see there's some shelf life to this outfit. Generally when garage band
heavyweights get together in some form of faux supergroup conglomeration,
inevitable ego storms destroy the union before it can properly fester into a
bump and grinding entity worth more than a curiosity listen. The difficult
second album hints that these girls just may have a future in the sleazy music
biz. Good thing too, as in these pristine, squeaky clean times, we need to hear
from the gutter. The Hank Williams and Hasil Adkins covers give it away: the
Knoxville Girls play, in fine American tradition, dangerous music. Loose not
sloppy, the record is actually a musical delight masquerading as a thrashy
affair. The girls can play, and there's no hiding that obvious fact.
