MEZZANINES
Mezzanines (Mud Records/Parasol)
Reviewed by Holly Day
This is an exceptional record that I have tried to review for a long time,
but keep getting caught up in listening to it and ending up with nothing
coherent to say at the end. Following heavily in the beautiful groove of
T-Rex and his legacy of psychedelic, mystical lyricism (filled with
references to liquid goats, wizards, and religious iconography) and
distortion-heavy guitar, with breathy vocals seemingly plastered over the
background of the music at the last minute, these songs are catchy with
plenty of brilliant hooks without ever once seeming cliched or contrived.
Like I said, this has been a hard one to take out of the review pile, simply
because once this review is done, I just won't have the luxury of sitting
down and listening to it again for a while.
