NEW YORK VOICES
Sing! Sing! Sing! (Concord)

Reviewed by Shaun Dale

A vocal quartet in the lineage of Lambert, Hendricks & Ross and the Manhattan Transfer, the New York Voices (Peter Eldridge, Lauren Kinhan, Darmon Meader and Kim Nazarian) have performed with big bands frequently over their 14 year history, notably on a Grammy winning collaboration with the Count Basie Orchestra. Sing! Sing! Sing! matches the singers with an all-star big band for a set of standards from the pens of Louis Prima, Duke Ellington, Hoagy Carmichael, Benny Goodman and other master songwriters. In addition to his vocal and arranging talents, NY Voice Darmon Meader demonstrates his prowess on saxophone on several cuts.

While there's not a great deal of originality either in the concept or execution of this music, there's enormous vocal and instrumental talent at play, and it's an entertaining set from start to finish. Fans of vocal jazz, the neo-swing revival or big band swing in general are sure to enjoy this one.
