OSCAR PETERSON
The Composer (Pablo)
Reviewed by Shaun Dale
Known for his wide command of the full spectrum of the jazz repertoire, and
particularly for the piano trio setting in which he so ably demonstrated
that command, Oscar Peterson was also an able composer who presented his
talents in a variety of settings. This disc, which collects material from
several sessions for Pablo recorded between 1974 and 1986, showcases
Peterson's original compositions. He is joined by a full orchestra, he
leads quintets that feature guitarist Joe Pass, and he plays unaccompanied
piano. And he does every bit of it superbly.
Peterson attracted some critics over the years, who felt he was perhaps too
busy a technician at the keys, but attentive audiences always found the
heart and soul of the musician behind his displays of technical proficiency,
and those soulful qualities are never more apparent than here Peterson
plays the music that comes from within himself. It's a gem of a collection,
a jewel in the crown of a true member of the jazz royal family.
