TWO TON BOA
Two Ton Boa (Kill Rock Stars)
Reviewed by Holly Day
Falling somewhere between cabaret burlesque and Alice in Chains grunge, Two
Ton Boa's 5-song debut is a eerie combination of driving guitars and music
boxes, powerful female vocals and near-chorale interludes. A good example of
this dichotomy is in the last song on the album, "Have Mercy," where singer
Sherry Fraser's voice rumbles low in the bass registers during most of the
song, only to punctuate the chorus lines with high pitched howls that sound
almost operatic. Lyrically, this evokes old school heavy metal epics,
relying heavily on dark, poetic images and archaic language, which risks
sounding corny at times, but the songs are put together musically well
enough that the borderline mawkishness is kept at just that - borderline.
