DRAZY HOOPS
Bring on the Hate (Slow Burn Records)

First of all: great instrumentation, great recording quality, funky-sounding disc. The guitar (courtesy of Drazy Hoops) sounds like this guy's intensely studied everyone from Eugene Chadbourne to David Bowie and somehow incorporated both into his sound, while backing instrumentation include some gorgeous violins from Mat Maneri and Marc Muller on equally incredible pedal steel. I'm still working my way through the lyric sheet, since it's there, but from listening to the songs themselves, I can't really tell you what the songs are about just because there's this highly distracting quality to Hoop's vocals, almost like he was singing along with a recording of his own music and singing just a little bit off-key. It's not a bad sound, just weird, and I like weird.
