GOLD SPARKLE BAND
Fugues & Flowers (Squealer)
Reviewed by Holly Day
Another cool CD in a series of very cool CDs from a very cool band.
Following in the tradition of Ornette Coleman, this horn-heavy quartet
screams scattered lullabies and lectures that skitter seamlessly from one
track to another as though this is one great, long jam-session propelled by
incredible amounts of energy and inhuman lung stamina. Charles Waters is the
demon behind the clarinet and sax, and man, does he blow! In a good way!
While the other players are excellent, too (Roger Ruzow on trumpet, Andrew
Barker on drums, and Adam Roberts on double bass), it's obvious from the
construction of these pieces that if there was a lead singer on this record,
it'd be that crazy horn man and his crazy horns.
