HAKIM
Talakik (Mondo Melodia)
Reviewed by Shaun Dale
A superstar in his native Egypt, Hakim has been making consistent inroads in
the international world music scene as well. This follow-up to his two
previous Mondo Melodia albums, Yaho and The Lion Roars, is definitely aimed
at expanding that international market. There are several guest producers
aboard, most notably Narada Michael Walden and Trans-Global Underground, but
while the producers do have some impact on the sound, it's Hakim's own
talents that make this one worth checking out. His preferred style of
music, sha'bi, incorporates both traditional and contemporary
instrumentation and beats and makes considerable demands on the talents of
vocalists. Hakim's voice is equal to the challenge, his beats are
irresistible, and this is an album that should please any fan of
contemporary Arabic sounds.
