MINK LUNGS
The Better Button (Ryko/Arena)
Reviewed by John Sekerka
By track seven the player's had it, and the song skips, fast-forwards, glitches, hiccups and stumbles, and as I reach for the eject button it dawns on me: I've been had. Track eight kicks in and the Mink Lungs return to regularly scheduled programming with a crunchy pop nugget. The smarmy bastards. Remember when recordings were fun, frivolous and unpredictable? That's the Mink Lungs, laying down a spate of styles, tempos and moods, all in an irreverent college radio style abandonment that for reasons unknown, seems to have drifted out of fashion. Sure it's a mess, but it's a glorious, tightly wound mess, and it sure is fun to get messy all over again.
