Hopelessly Devoted To You Vol. 4 (Hopeless Records)

Sounding nothing at all similar to the asinine Olivia Newton-John song that inspired it, "Hopelessly Devoted" kicks it all off with Thrice. They lend their unique stabbing gestures with blood dripping from their wrists, as the melodicore blade strikes meat. Avenged Sevenfold appear to like Morbid Angel almost as much as I do. It's curious to hear of metal and punk bands commingling so peacefully nowadays. Ska-core was an unsurprising (and usually troublesome) marriage. But punk rockers used to abhor metal bands! Then again, who doesn't hate Motley Crue? Show of hands. anyone? The best and most memorable track here belongs to Samiam, who brush faintly against Emo, but don't need a hug every five minutes. "Hopelessly Devoted To You (Volume 4, mind you)" also includes The Weakerthans, Atom & His Package, Jebb Ott (of the band Fifteen), Common Rider, Digger, and Scared of Chaka. I wasn't too blown away by Mustard Plug, but Against All Authority made up for it. Especially the bass guitar and the sixteenth notes on the high hats.
