BAPPI LAHIRI
Bappiwood Remixes (Bappiwood Records)
Reviewed by Shaun Dale
"Old is gold," according to Bappi Lahiri, the king of Bollywood soundtracks
for over a quarter of a century. As his soundtrack work has slowed in
recent times, he's turned to remixing some of the songs he's created for
literally hundreds of Indian films. On Bappiwood Remixes, that process is a
family affair, with the vocal chores falling to his daughter Rema and the
remix duties taken up by his son Bappa.
The result steps past routine dance music by adding the intriguing accents
of the Indian subcontinent. This is excellent stuff to slip in to your next
mix of world dance music, alongside the equally novel sounds being created
from recycled Arabic, Latin and other sources. If you're not up for that,
just playing it straight through is bound to help you get your groove on.
