BRIAN HUGHES
Along The Way (A440 Music Group)
Reviewed by Ron Saranich
Along The Way is the aptly titled new Cd from Canadian guitarist Brian Hughes. It sums up the lessons learned and experiences gained by Hughes during his lifetime. The music is an eclectic blend of bop, Latin, street, lounge, and new age. The band is a mix of musicians Hughes has met during his career, with Les Portelli on piano and synthesizers, Tim Landers on bass, Neil Wilkinson on drums, and Jason Hann on percussion. In addition, Chris Botti plays trumpet on one tune, Eric Marienthal plays alto sax on two numbers, and John Nau performs on Hammond B3 organ for two songs. Finally, Hughes' guitar style at times reminds me of a funky Wes Montgomery combined with a dose of Pat Methany.
Along The Way is thoughtful music without being pretentious. My enjoyment of it improved with each successive listen. Favorite numbers include the title track "Along The Way" and "Son y Lola." However, it's Hughes' "Omaha Unbound" that is the gem of this fine collection of music. "Omaha Unbound" is one of those tunes that lingers in my mind long after the final notes fade away. Several times I've caught myself humming Hughes' song, then smiling in recognition. The music soars, seemingly lighter than air, and creates a wistful, yearning mood conducive to deep reverie.
Hughes has created a wonderful testament to his talents, vision, and passion. As a result, he has constructed one of the finer contemporary jazz recordings I've heard in some time. Check it out along the way that is your own life. There's always room for good jazz in my world.
