THE CASH BROTHERS
A Brand New Night (Zoe)
Reviewed by Shaun Dale
There's still a touch of the familiar, but Andrew and Peter Cash, leaders of
the Canadian alt.country quintet that carries the family name, have conjured
up some brand new elements for their latest Zoe release, A Brand New Night.
It's a little edgier, a little rockier, a little more eclectic and a lot
more electric than their previous outings, but it's still solid, song based
music that features their fraternal harmonies front and center.
The brothers handle all the songwriting chores, and they write some real
fine songs, with plenty of hooks both lyrically and melodically. They have
diverse backgrounds, in country, rock and the Toronto punk scene, and draw
on influences ranging from Gram Parsons to Pink Floyd. The result is a big
step forward for them artistically, and potentially a big step commercially,
too. The Cash Brothers are living proof that you don't have to compromise
quality on the road to commerciality, and I've got my fingers crossed for
this one. You should get yours moving to the "shop me" button.
