THE CHEVELLES
Girl God (Zip)

Reviewed by Alan Wright

Here's something new from an Aussie band who've been around for about ten years or so, and this is their seventh or eight album. Not much has changed, as they continue to pump out good tunes of basic rock and roll with good hooks and choruses. Like their influences (Plimsouls, Real Kids, Stems, the Who), they specialize in powerpop, all ringing guitars, great vocals and lotsa energy. Songs like "Round and Round" and "Make It Happen" explode with that sorta Mod-ish charm and irresistible chorus hook that gets your head a boppin'. "Goodbye Sally" adds strings for a '60s pop sound that sounds real cool. Yeah, there isn't anything here that hasn't been done before, but when it's done this good, that doesn't really matter now does it?
