CHRIS DUARTE GROUP
Romp (Zoe/Rounder)
Reviewed by Shaun Dale
There are few more daunting challenges in the world of music than those
faced by a Strat-slinger from the great state of Texas. The legendary names
have all come before you, and there's somebody great onstage at damn near
every bar, damn near every night. You've got to be more than just another
explosive shredder to break out of the pack, and over the last decade, Chris
Duarte's proven that he's even more than that.
Oh, he can play guitar, as they say, just like ringin' a bell, but he can
also write a real fine song, and sing it effectively, and he works his ass
off night after night (he celebrated this release with a whirlwind 27 dates
in 12 states). The net result? He didn't just break out of the pack, he's
busy breaking the mold.
If you don't know why yet, grab yourself a copy of Romp and find out. There
are tributes, overt (as in his nod to fellow Texan Eric Johnson, "Like
Eric") and less so (he doesn't mention Jimi Hendrix in "101," but there are
moments when he channels him) but mostly there's just Chris Duarte, and his
bandmates Ed Miles (drums) and John Jordan (bass), ripping it up and having
one hell of a, well, romp.
This is Texas rockin' blues like you want it. Believe me, you want it.
