JUNE CARTER CASH
Wildwood Flower (Dualtone)
Reviewed by Shaun Dale
Wildwood Flower is the last musical testament of one of the giants of
American popular music, regardless of genre. Her contributions to that
music are diverse and immeasurable, from carrying on the Carter family
legacy from childhood, performing with Mother Maybelle and her sisters,
keeping Johnny Cash alive and well long enough to become a legend in his own
right, and ultimately assuming her role as the beloved matriarch of one of
the greatest extended musical families in history.
She gets plenty of help from that extended family, with appearances here by
a cast that includes Johnny, Norman Blake, Marty Stuart, Carlene Carter and
many more - with more than a fair share of them being kin. Still, in the
final analysis, it's all June, and it's all great. From anyone else, much
of the sentiment would be mawkish, much of the humor cornpone. From June
Carter Cash, it's just perfect.
