KINKY FRIEDMAN
Sold American (Vanguard)

Reviewed by Shaun Dale

Peace Corps veteran, outlaw country pioneer, best-selling novelist, friend of Presidents and winner of the coveted NOW 'Male Chauvinist Pig Of The Year' award, Kinky Friedman's racked up one of those 'been there, done that and come back around for another helping' kind of careers. He maintains that, although his keyboard is well occupied with the production of his mystery novels, he hasn't written a new song in 20 years. That turns out to be perfectly OK for his audiences, though, who still find plenty of delight in the old ones.

Sold American is where it all started, with Kinky leading the Texas Jewboys, in whose ranks could be found folks like Norman Blake, the Glaser Brothers, Billy Swan and John Hartford. Not all Jews. Not all from Texas. Things around Kinky are like that sometimes.

This 30th Anniversary reissue included a pair of unreleased tracks from the album sessions and a multi-media presentation featuring the Kinkster reminiscing about the album and the times it appeared in. It was way ahead of its time in many ways, and just right for today in every way. Whether it's a long lost favorite or a new discovery, you really oughta get it and get kinked up a bit.
