MOON SPANK
Moon Spank (self-released)
Reviewed by Shaun Dale
There are only eight tracks on the debut CD of the White Plains, NY based
trio Moon Spank, but that's enough for them to show the several sides of
their approach to the rock music form. The Irish-born vocalist is accompanied by guitarist Tony Packes, with multi-instrumentalist Greg Saracino handling the bass, drums and vibraphone, at least in the studio (ok, then, the basement; this self-produced affair is home-recorded, as well). On stage, they invite various "Mystery Men" to join in on drums or bass in order to reproduce their ambitious arrangements live.
I've got to admit, I've seen few bands with a stronger commitment to the DIY ethic. In the album notes, they brag that they spent $0 and 0 time in a 'real' studio, and gleefully point out that "microphones costing over $90 were not used at any time." Still, they managed to get excellent sound with the equipment and environment they chose. Stylistically, the sounds range from dream-pop balladry to balls-out rock and roll, with more than a casual nod to some jam band Americana influences. They're generally uncategorizable, though, with a tendency to go ahead and play anything they can play well, and they play a wide range of things well.
Going to www.moonspank.com may be the easiest way to find this one, and it's worth
looking up.
