SONAFIELD
Operations Of The Unseen (Independent)

Well THIS is refreshing. Yes, Sonafield could be tossed in with the Alternacrowd by someone who isn't paying attention. I define the Alternacrowd as the myriad bands who can't be told apart because they have no real interesting ideas and a similar instrumental sound with nothing happening beyond standard chords and a few electronic tricks. Sonafield ain't that. Truth be told, I'm not crazy about all of their songs, yet I want to hear even those because they all have musical ideas that intrigue me. Jason Lackie's guitar colors the music with unusual chord voicings and compelling textures that make it all worth hearing, and each song has its own signature sound, which can't be said of 90 percent of the CDs being released today. It's nice to get to the end of an alt rock CD without being bored stiff. Sonafield's just starting to get their sounds sent out past the confines of the Seattle club scene, and they're definitely a band to keep tabs on.
