TEN BENSON
Benson Burner (Jetset)
Reviewed by Alan Wright
This is one of craziest, most hard-to-pin down CDs I've gotten in awhile. Ten Benson are a British group who play down and dirty hard rock scuzz. The singer sounds like a cross between Mark E. Smith of the Fall and B. R. Waller of the Country Teasers fronting an AC/DC cover band! They also have an obvious sarcastic streak and off-kilter sense of humor, as evidenced by the uber-sexist "Tits," and especially "Rock Cottage" which has lines like "Rock cottage, high wattage / Rock cottage, mmmm hot sausage." Then there are songs like "Robot Tourist" that sound like some weird amalgamation of Gary Glitter and Thin Lizzy. "Under Heavy Riffage" might be their credo as this is really thick and heavy in the best way. It's a lot of fun, actually, and grows on me with each listen.
