TIM O'BRIEN
Traveler (Sugar Hill)
Reviewed by Shaun Dale
Tim O'Brien draws on his roots in and affection for bluegrass and Celtic
sounds on Traveler, but those influences are only accents on Traveler, a set
of 12 original songs of the road, both literally and metaphorically. By and
large it's pretty straight singer/songwriter folk music, offered by one of
the best singer/songwriters in folk music.
Of course, he's also one hell of a picker and there's plenty of virtuoso
guitar and mandolin work. Along the roads he's traveled, he's also picked
up some pretty fine musical friends, and among the tracks here you'll find
performances by the likes of Jerry Douglas, Bela Fleck and Dirk Powell,
among others.
It's an altogether satisfying release, one that continues to establish
O'Brien as a talented and entertaining solo artist, in addition to his well
earned fame as a founding member of the late, great Hot Rize.
