THE HOLLIES
Evolution (Sundazed)

Just before this album was released, The Hollies had another smash hit with "Carrie Anne," so they were red hot property. The Beatles were changing everything with their experimental music at the time, so the pop single oriented Hollies attempted to keep pace. The overall atmosphere of Evolution is quite fluffy-dreamy, with a few great poppers thrown in (most notably "Have You Ever Loved Somebody"), but close inspection reveals a band that wasn't particularly comfortable in the o-zone. If there were clumsy segments here and there, all was and is still forgiven the moment their trademark vocal harmonies hit our ears. I don't know about you, but I'd listen to N-Sync's corporate muzak if The Hollies sang it. The five bonus tracks (including the classic "Jennifer Eccles") bring the total of harmony-driven nirvana visits to 15, and that should be about all you need to know.
