JIMMY DEAN
20 Great Story Songs (Curb Records)

Reviewed by Shaun Dale

I've known all the words to the Jimmy Dean classic "Big Bad John" for about as long as I can remember, and it's still a good 'un. There are a bunch of other good 'uns on this disc, and some that, well, the hogs that Mr. Dean makes into sausage couldn't eat all the corn that he fits into some of these tracks. But there's a ready audience of folks who just lap it up, and Jimmy Dean aims to please just as much on a CD as on the breakfast table.

For those willing to wade through the cornfield, there are some definite high points. "Ringo" is another old favorite, the take on Kris Kristofferson's "Sunday Morning Coming Down" is surprisingly affecting and effective, and I'm a sucker for Tom T. Hall's "Old Dogs, Children And Watermelon Wine." You might find another favorite or two mixed in amongst the 20 tracks, and if your mom doesn't love this one, your grandma probably will.
