Canada's version of Beck continues his quest for musical supremacy, and by gub if he ain't this close. Nine delicious and diverse tracks would be plenty for an album worth serious attention, but the Mayor ups the ante by slipping in an opera of sorts. "Barfly - A Tragedy In 1/2 An Act" is a riveting eleven scene masterpiece that is more theatre than rock, relying on a cast of many who lend their animated voices to the spectacle. To pull off a mesmerizing feat about a, a-hem, bar frequenting fly, is really quite a coup. And just wait or the wonderful ending. Pete Townshend is rolling over in his grave .... what's that you say?
