If Superfly were set in England in the 21st century with all white characters, basically you'd have Layer Cake.

Dennis Craig plays an unnamed drug dealer who is quite successful at his trade but longs to retire from it. He's almost achieved his dream when he's given a job to find the daughter of a drug boss (Michael Gambon) and the no-good she's shacked up with. Meanwhile a less-than-sane acquaintance has stolen a shipment of ecstasy and the pissed-ff and dangerous owners think our boy has something to do with it. The only people he can trust are his mates Morty (George Harris) and Gene (Colm Meaney). Or can he?

It's a film that's heavy on the intrigue, and Michael Vaughn, the producer of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels has cooked everything up to perfection as director. John Connolly's adaptation of his novel is full of local color too that's often hilarious, occasionally unnerving, and always entertaining. It's well worth seeking out a slice.

The Skinny:
Did I enjoy the movie? MMM, Cake!
Would I go to see it again? Sure, now that it's available on DVD.
