THE BLACK SEA
Set and Setting (Kinda Like Music)
Reviewed by Erick Mertz
Albums that are so obviously stylistic fusions seem to fall into an all or nothing proposition. They will either hammer the genre crossings, or see the effort victimized by an indifferent reaction by both camps.
Hip-hop and jazz pundits might find The Black Sea's album "Set and Setting" a satisfying listen. While it is neither a frankly expressive pastiche of samples, nor ground breaking with its jazzy riffs, it coolly rides an eclectic, electric fence. Songs such as "Dashboard Pipe" and "LSDub" are intoxicating, glamorous plays, tough enough to turn heads but still clean and affable enough for a casual listener.
