THE FLESHTONES
Beachhead (Yep Roc)
Reviewed by DJ Johnson
Seriously, are these guys ever gonna run out of rocket fuel? From the garagey sass of "Serious" to the hoppin' pop of "I Want The Answers" and the thundering Sin Cityesque intro of "Do Something For Me," Beachhead sounds like vintage Fleshtones Super Rock. In other words, they don't seem to have lost a step. Recorded in two steps with two producers, Beachhead is arranged accordingly, the songs recorded with Jim Diamond coming in the first half of the album and those recorded with Rick Miller (Southern Culture On The Skids) in the second. If you're looking for a huge difference, like a fast half and a slow half, you haven't been paying attention to The Fleshtones all these years. If anything, the songs recorded with Miller have a cool layer of reverb over the top that is so thin and unobtrusive it only serves to add a hint of mystique that works quite nicely for the band. It's all good. It's all The Fleshtones, a band so great it's still okay that they call their music "Super Rock."
