GRAYSON CAPPS
If You Knew My Mind (Hyena)
Reviewed by Shaun Dale
At 38, Grayson Capps approaches his first solo recording with a full career, including a series of bands, recordings, tours with major artists, film soundtracks and his own motion picture debut, already behind him. The Alabama native has led a full life, and every minute of every hour of every day of that life informs the heartfelt performance of songs that, with repeated listening, contain layers of meaning that first unfold in your mind, and then totally enfold it.
Touchstones? Townes is often mentioned. JJ Cale comes up. One that comes to my mind is Taj Mahal, primarily because, like Taj, Capps has studied and mastered so many of the styles that make up the market category Americana, and he has integrated them into his performance personality so thoroughly that you might think he'd invented them.
It's an old friend kind of brand new album. Don't miss it.
