HARPER
Down to the Rhythm (Blind Pig Records)

Reviewed by Eric Steiner

A couple of years ago, I heard Harper's Under the Radar CD, Way Down Deep Inside, and was impressed at how he could tell a story not only through words but through music as well. Since then, this Australian bluesman has signed with Blind Pig, and his US-label debut, Down to the Rhythm, showcases a truly original bluesman adept at both the harp and the didgeridoo. This year, Harper's travels will show him America until Thanksgiving, and he'll return home for an Australian Summer tour that begins in January of 2006. The instrumental "Air" is a forceful workout on the harp, while songs like "I Believed in You" and "Last Cup of Coffee" really give Harper an opportunity to stretch.

Track List:

Down to the Rhythm * Big Brown Land * Last Cup of Coffee * Something Happened Here Last Night * Gimme the Money * I'll Follow You * I've Been Waiting * Air * I Believed in You * The World Starts Loving You
