It took me a few songs to get used to the kind of loose approach P:ano take to both playing and singing. Then I ran into obstacle number two: many of the somewhat twee-ish tunes seem to just get going and then suddenly peter out. Another fragment might have a tin pan alley flavor with twisted whimsey dressing, as if they're channeling Harry Nilsson, or maybe something that sounds as if it were inspired by Brian Wilson's early outtakes. Now and then everything pulls together and an entire song will entertain, and there could be an entertainment factor in the anarchy of the whole thing for some people, but I found myself wishing they'd made this half an hour instead of a full hour, focusing on the better ideas and saving the rest for the inevitable box set. There's definitely some talent at work here, I just can't figure out what it's working on.
