PSYCHOGRASS
Now Hear This (Adventure Music America)

Reviewed by Ron Saranich

Listen Up! Psychograss is alive and well. Rumors of their demise were premature. They simply were on a seven year hiatus. Why is this important? Because not only are members of Psychograss among the best on their chosen instruments, but they produce some of the finest contemporary bluegrass around. Their style displays a diverse array of influences, including acoustic, classical, bluegrass, jazz, world, swing, Irish, and modern music. It's joyous, exciting, and imaginative, soaring lighter than air. Who can resist?

Psychograss was originally formed by ex-members of the cutting-edge David Grissman Quintet, mandolist Mike Marshall and violinist Darol Anger. Upon leaving Grissman, Marshall formed the Modern Mandolin Quartet while Anger created the Turtle Island String Band. Eventually they recruited Todd Phillips, Grissman's bass player, plus other musicians, and Psychograss was born. Three years latter, Tony Trishka, banjoist, and David Grier, guitarist, replaced departing members. This current lineup complements each other superbly, highlighted by a special interplay among band members. Their musical ideas are flawlessly articulated, even when played at kick-ass speeds.

Deep inside each of us, we're all a little psychotic. So, when those crazed moments hit, put Now Hear This on your CD player and turn a potential downer into an eloquent expression of joy. Let the exuberant sound of Psychograss safely guide you home.
