DVD: Culture Club Live At The Albert Hall
20th Anniversary Concert (SPG)

Reviewed by John Sekerka

The highlight of the concert comes after the band finishes their opening number and mammoth hit "Do You Really Wanna Hurt Me". The real Boy George appears stage right and gives kudos to his excellent impersonator. The show kinda goes downhill from there, since it becomes quite obvious that despite a great voice, Boy George really was nothing more than Barry Manilow in drag. Besides offering a showcase for George's vivacious wardrobe, the concert does provide a tearful reunion of the joy variety for die hard fans, who provide the best bits in the interview segments. The gig only reinforces the fact that, like most music of that new romantic era of the early eighties, Culture Club doesn't wear well with time. Worst thing is you'll be walking around for weeks humming "Do You...", just like you do with "Copacabana" after exiting an elevator. Damn you, damn you all to hell!
