HUM MACHINE
Theorems and Compositions of The
Last Action Rocker (Cancer)

Reviewed by DJ Johnson

This guitar-driven, midwest rock has a certain rootsy appeal that is there even in the weaker songs and extremely compelling in their best work. "Mechanical Devices" has a power-blues framework, a thick bass line and beautiful vocal harmonies in the chorus, all combining to make it feel like a classic rock song you think you know but can't quite place. The entire CD plays through with a satisfying atmosphere that has a consistent vibe even if the styles differ from song to song, partly because of the overall power of the band but mostly because Mark Sinnott has a voice that is both versatile and unique. With so many vocalists sounding just like one another these days, it's always nice to find one you can still hear in your head an hour after the CD ends.
