MAYDAY MURDERS
Mayday Murders (Fire Records)
Reviewed by Holly Day
This is definitely one record where the recording quality is almost as
integral to the album as the music itself. All of the songs on this
wonderful, beautiful little E.P. are recorded in this scratchy, echoey way
that sounds as though this is a slab of vinyl from the '40s, since stored
in a box in less-than-ideal conditions and played on a Califone record
player, one with the speakers built into the player itself. The music
itself ranges from guitar-heavy garage rock to something close to fingerpickin' country, which would make for a disparate collection of songs if they didn't have the aforementioned thematic recording quality tying the record together.
