MOOSSA
Get Away (504 North)
Reviewed by Shaun Dale
While I really like this, the second album by the Virginia-based quartet
named for it's lead singer, John Moossa, I get the feeling that the music on
the disc doesn't really capture the full dimension of the band. The songs,
variously written by Moossa, guitarist Jim Faricatore and/or bassist Ryan
Davis, (the lineup is rounded out by drummer Scott Lewis) are presented in
4-5 minute chunks, but you can feel the 15 minute version lying just under
the surface of every track.
That's right, Moossa is a jam band. Some of you will probably stop reading
right there, but while there's a fleeting whiff of patchouli here and there,
they're really not one of those hippie jam bands you're so afraid of. The
vibe is more roots-rock than cosmic noodling, and the presentation here is
admirably disciplined. I particularly appreciate some of the tough-toned
topicality of John Moossa's songwriting compositions, but all the songs are
well structured in their recorded presentations, and frankly, these guys
play them in a way that makes me want to hear the longer version that some
of the fade-outs promise.
This one's worth keeping an eye out for, and I'll definitely be watching for
the next one...and a show. I think I need a show. Come west, young men.
